ACTOR Benedict Cumberbatch used real life Sherlock Holmes techniques to survive a terrifying kidnap attempt.
The Sherlock star, 35, came close to death when gun-toting car-jackers attacked him.
Brave Benedict was convinced his life would end – but he played mind games with the thugs as they bundled him into a car.
And, just like his famous super- sleuth character, he managed to outwit the armed yobs and convince them to spare his life.
Cumberbatch, currently filming The Hobbit in New Zealand, was attacked while making mini-series To The Ends Of The Earth.
He had gone to Santa Lucia, on the northeast coast of South Africa near Mozambique, to learn scuba-diving with two pals.
But while driving back to their hotel with actress Denise Black, 52, and a South African friend, their car blew a tyre and an armed gang pounced.
Benedict said: “The three of us were trying to change the tyre.
“These six men appeared suddenly from the eucalyptus plantation.
“They said: ‘Put your hands on your head, don’t look at us,’ and were frisking us for drugs, money, weapons.Then they bundled us into the car.”
The gang then drove off with the trio held hostage. “I could see the headlight beams bumping over the dirt track and I thought of shallow graves,” he said. “By the end of the night I was tied up next to Denise.
“They pulled over, pulled the stuff out of the car.” But then they stopped. Benedict said: “They dragged me up and put me in the boot of the car.
“But I argued my way out. I said: ‘If you leave me in here, it’s not the lack of air, it’s the small space. There’s a problem with my heart and my brain.’
“I just tried to explain to them: ‘I will die, possibly have a fit, and it will be a problem for you. I will be a dead Englishman in your car. Not good.’
“They shut the boot and had an argument, and then pulled me out.
“So I kind of thank God I had the presence of mind to give them the idea that it would be better to keep me alive. And the other two hadn’t been harmed.”
They were all tied up before the gang fled.
Benedict added: “It taught me that you come into this world as you leave it, on your own. It’s made me want to live a life slightly less ordinary.”
So yeah this is a petition, to get Benedict Cumberbatch to do an audiobook for Arthur Conan Doyles' Sherlock Holmes books.
If anyone’s interested. Or yeah. I mean, I’d like it to happen. I don’t know if this petition has been around yet or not. But yeah. Oh and I was signature number 1234. I thought it was funny.
